Rain, Snow Likely Wednesday In Stillwater; Could Flood Riverwalk

STILLWATER, MN — More than an inch of rain and snow is forecast to fall in Stillwater by Wednesday night, which could lead to the St. Croix River flooding the Stillwater Riverwalk, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rain has fallen for much of Tuesday, with showers set to continue in Stillwater until Wednesday night, the NWS said. Up to an inch of rainfall is possible in the city by Wednesday morning.

Rain could turn to snow at points, with accumulation likely to be less than a half-inch, according to the NWS.

A sustained period of precipitation following several days of warm weather and snow melt could lead to a swelling of the St. Croix River in the Stillwater area.

The river’s height was recorded at 76.17 feet around noon Tuesday, less than a foot below the point Stillwater usually sees its first flood impacts.

The Stillwater Riverwalk becomes “inundated” when the St. Croix River reaches a height of 77 feet, while a height of 80 feet would cause Lakefront Park in Hudson, Wisconsin, to flood, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The St. Croix River in the Stillwater area could rise to 82.6 feet by 1 p.m. March 29, based on precipitation forecasts, NOAA said.

Residences along the river could experience flooding in their basements at 85 feet, while officials close the Stillwater Lift Bridge when the river rises to about 86 feet, according to NOAA.
