St. Croix River Crests in Stillwater, Drops Below Flood Stage

The St. Croix River crested in Stillwater late last month, and it started dropping quickly over the weekend.

STILLWATER, MN — The St. Croix River crested late last month, and the river levels have dropped significantly since then. As of Tuesday, the river is at 86 feet in Stillwater, a foot below flood stage.

The National Weather Service has canceled its flood warnings in the area. Still, there will be lots of debris to clean up in the aftermath of the flood.

Stillwater Mayor Ted Kozlowski said the temporary levee downtown will remain in place, but workers could begin removing it sometime in May.

"I’m still hoping for Memorial Day weekend," Kozlowski told Minnesota Public Radio.

"The river is dropping faster than it’s been forecast to drop. So far it’s been pretty good news — every morning when I wake up and look at the hydrograph, it’s dropped a little bit further than they thought it would the night before."
