Stillwater is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Stillwater has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Stillwater is known as the "Birthplace of Minnesota." This charming city hosted the Territorial Convention in 1848, which laid the groundwork for Minnesota's statehood.
- The Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater houses The Prison Mirror. Founded in 1887, this inmate-run newspaper is the nation's oldest continuously-operated penal publication, celebrated for its exceptional journalism and numerous national awards.
- Stillwater features a Trolley Tour that takes you back in time. The narrated ride offers insights into Stillwater's rich history and architectural gems, making it a favorite activity for history buffs.
- The city is home to the historic Lift Bridge, an engineering marvel. Spanning the St. Croix River, this bridge has connected Minnesota and Wisconsin since 1931 and is an example of the rare Waddell and Harrington type of vertical-lift highway bridge construction.
- Stillwater has a secret staircase that offers breathtaking views. The Main Street Stairs, formerly the South Hill Stairs, feature over 150 steps that lead to a stunning overlook of the city and the river, making it a perfect spot for a mini-workout with a reward.
