60 Years in Woodbury, 30 Years in the Art Game

Patch catches up with the owner of Half Price Framing in Woodbury.

Earl Peck enjoys talking about art.

That makes sense. He owns Woodbury’s Half Price Framing, located at 1830 Wooddale Drive, suite 300, and has been in the art and framing field for about 30 years.

Patch asked Peck, who also owns Grandpa Earl's Country Store in Annandale, about his business.

Patch: Tell us a bit about the history of Half Price Framing?

Peck: We started out mostly as antiques and furniture, but as the internet arrived we found that almost anyone could go online and find and sell anything and everything, so we had to branch out into other areas. That is where we began to focus more on art and framing.

Patch: What services do you provide?

Peck: We sell both framing services as well as unframed prints. We have over 500,000 prints in stock in our two locations. Although we specialize in wildlife, we have access to almost every artist and genre available.

In fact, we publish some Minnesota artists. We provide custom framing for our prints as well as customer-owned prints. We do lots of family memory items—wedding photos, graduation certificates, or memories of that great fish that was caught out at the lake.

Patch: What makes Half Price Framing unique?

Peck: Our price and personal customer service. We know almost all of our customers personally, and they keep coming back and bringing friends and relatives.

We love it when someone brings in a coupon from a framer that is offering 50-60 percent off. Our everyday prices beat their “sale” prices without sacrificing quality in workmanship or materials.

Patch: You've lived in Woodbury for 60 years. What's your take on the changes in town over past six decades?

Peck: There was basically nothing out here 60 years ago but farms.

I can remember when the first housing development started in Woodbury off Century Avenue. There was a big billboard for the houses—$12,500—nothing down to buy a home. They were nice houses and are still there filled with families today.

Patch: Anything else you'd like to add?

Peck: Woodbury is a great place to live. What I really like about it is that we have everything within a few miles or even blocks—restaurants, groceries, medical, entertainment, high-end shopping. You name it, we have it.

Woodbury has gotten much larger and that has caused some traffic issues, but overall I think the Woodbury planners and mayor have done a great job of keeping the small-town atmosphere and at the same time allowing growth and jobs to move to Woodbury. My hometown!
