Premature Road Failures, CVB: Woodbury Council Preview

The problem with the roads could cost the city an additional $13 million in maintenance costs over the next 10 years.

The Woodbury City Council workshop Wednesday will include discussions on the potential establishment of a convention and visitors bureau and roads needing work soon than expected.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at City Hall. It is a workshop, so no formal action will be taken. Find the full agenda on the city’s website.

Roads

The city over the past couple of years has fielded more and more calls about premature road failures.

It’s a statewide problem, and the issue seems to be related to a blacktop mix used during the late 1980s into the ’90s, though Minnesota Department of Transportation research on the problem isn’t conclusive, Klayton Eckles, city engineer for Woodbury, told Patch in May.

About 30 percent of Woodbury roads could be affected, according to the council memo, meaning roughly 100 miles of roads could require much higher maintenance levels in the coming years.

All told, it could cost the city an additional $13 million over the next decade to maintain those streets.

CVB

Woodbury is considering establishing a convention and visitors bureau, part of an effort to market and brand the city.

The council on Wednesday will discuss possibly hiring a public-relations firm and entering into an agreement with another company for consulting services for the potential CVB, according to the council memo.

The CVB would be funded through a 3 percent lodging tax at area hotels, and city officials are working with local innkeepers to gather feedback, Jason Egerstrom, communications coordinator, told Patch in July.

“It’s another marketing tool to promote Woodbury as a place to hold large-scale regional events,” he said

If Woodbury decides to move forward with the initiative, the CVB would be a separate entity from the city, though Woodbury officials would likely have a place on the organization’s board of directors.
