Teen Killed Driving In Closed Twin Cities Construction Zone: Patrol

The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the east Twin Cities metro. Two other teens were injured.

LAKE ELMO, MN — A 17-year-old driver was killed and two other teenagers were injured early Thursday morning in a crash that happened in a closed-off construction zone, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

It is not yet known if alcohol was involved in the crash, authorities said.

At about 3:30 a.m., a 2006 Chev Equinox traveling on the closed-off portion of westbound Highway 36, hit a dirt pile, and rolled, according to investigators.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office, Lakeview EMS, Allina Health EMS, and Lake Elmo Fire crews responded to the scene.

The driver — identified as Michael Philip Schweiger, of Roseville — was ejected, authorities said. He was not wearing his seat belt, according to investigators.

Two passengers — a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old — suffered non-life threatening injuries and are being treated at Regions Hospital. The passengers were wearing their seat belts, according to the patrol.

Conditions were dry at the time of the crash.
