Trump Leading on Big Pharma Reform

Opinion on Trump Admin leading on Big Pharma

Just a few months ago, President Trump signed an executive order directing drugmakers to lower the prices of medicines to the rates other countries pay. Yet since then, there has been little to no mention of the directive – and certainly no action from Congress to make it law.

The fact is, this executive order was long overdue. Pharmaceutical companies – better known as Big Pharma – have been ripping Americans off for far too long. Eighty-five percent of voters say prescription costs are rising, and more than half report that someone in their household has had trouble affording their medicine. Even worse, 81 percent agree that Big Pharma raises prices every year just to pad profits.

Americans are ready for reform. Seventy-eight percent support Trump’s Most-Favored Nation plan to tie U.S. prices to those paid abroad. And 96 percent agree that drugs developed with taxpayer dollars should be sold to Americans at a low cost. These are not partisan issues – they’re matters of fairness and survival.

Congress needs to act. Polling shows 86 percent of voters are more likely to support candidates who take on Big Pharma, while nearly 80 percent are less likely to back those who take its money. The message is loud and clear: Americans want action, not excuses.

It’s time for Congress to implement the MFN executive order, lower drug costs, and finally put patients before profits.
