Updated: Woodbury Man Sentenced After Hitting Victim in Bar Fight

A Woodbury was recently sentenced to jail time and a fine after he was accused of hitting another man in the face with a beer glass during an October 2010 bar fight.

Darren Lee Hones, 47, was also convicted for disorderly conduct stemming from the incident, which left the victim with a fractured nose and stitches in his face.

Hones told Patch that there was a "big misunderstanding" and he did not hit the other man in the face with a beer glass. He did admit to punching him, however.

"It was self-defense," Hones said.

He said the other man started the altercation.

"There are regrets on both sides," Hones said.

A little before 10 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2010, police were dispatched to O’Malley’s Irish Pub on a report of an assault. They saw one man with a towel on his face and another man, later identified as Hones, with a towel wrapped around his hand, according to the complaint.

Witnesses at the scene told police the victim went up to Hones and a woman at the bar and began speaking with them. Hones, witnesses told police, then “sucker punched” the man with the beer glass, and continued with a downward slashing motion after the pint glass broke on the victim’s face.

Hones said that did not happen, and the other man came at him in an aggressive manner.

Witnesses told police the victim did not appear to do anything to provoke the attack.

A Woodbury ambulance transported the victim to Regions Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured nose and given stitches for the lacerations to his face.

The victim told police that he was at the bar to speak with his ex-wife, who is also Hones' ex-wife. He said Hones told him to "leave town," the complaint says.
