Woodbury Teen Dies Days After Falling Through Lake Ice

WOODBURY, MN — A 16-year-old Woodbury boy has died days after falling through the ice on a local lake, according to authorities.

Yahye Ali Abdi passed away Thursday at the University of Minnesota Fairview East Bank Hospital, where he was being treated for injuries sustained in the incident. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled his death as caused by freshwater drowning.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon when Abdi fell through the ice on Markgrafs Lake. A 911 call was made around 4:30 p.m., reporting that he was in the water, authorities said.

When first responders arrived, they discovered that two other people had also fallen through the ice while attempting to help Abdi. All three were rescued from the frigid water and taken to the hospital. Abdi succumbed to his injuries several days later.

This incident was the second ice rescue of the day in Woodbury. Earlier Monday, a man was pulled from Wilmes Lake around 11:15 a.m. after falling through thin ice, according to officials.

Authorities continue to warn residents about the dangers of venturing onto unstable or thin ice, especially as temperatures fluctuate this season.
