1. Thousands of kids to lose in-network access to Children's Mercy Hospital (fox4kc.com) — Families in Kansas City who use Blue Cross Blue Shield marketplace plans could soon find Children’s Mercy Hospital and its pediatric clinicians out-of-network, potentially affecting tens of thousands of kids. With no comparable children’s hospital closer than St. Louis, experts warn this contract dispute and looming federal subsidy changes may leave local parents scrambling for affordable, nearby care.

2. Holiday travelers face delays at KCI as new accessibility programs launch (kctv5.com) — Kansas City International Airport is juggling heavy holiday crowds with some multi-hour flight delays, while rolling out new accessibility tools like the Aira guidance app and the Sunflower program for travelers with disabilities. A popular guest pass option now lets non-ticketed visitors clear security to greet arrivals or linger longer with departing loved ones.

3. Kansas City's Gem Theatre marks 44th annual Kwanzaa celebration (fox4kc.com) — Kwanzaa celebrations are underway at Kansas City’s historic Gem Theater, with free, community-focused events continuing through New Year’s Day. Organized by the National Black United Front’s Kansas City chapter, the week features African markets, performances, and reflections on unity, culture, and resilience, and organizers emphasize that everyone is welcome to learn about and join the festivities.

4. Standoff ends with Kansas City man in custody after alleged robbery of his roommates (kctv5.com) — Kansas City police arrested a local man after a two-hour standoff in which he allegedly attacked one roommate and was previously accused of robbing another at gunpoint. Court records show he faces serious felony charges and remains jailed in Clay County on a $100,000 bond, with a bond reduction hearing set for Dec. 30.

5. Court records: Kansas City man smashes restaurant windows over condiment charge (kctv5.com) — A Kansas City man is accused of causing over $1,000 in damage after rocks were thrown through windows at a local restaurant during a dispute over extra condiment charges. Jackson County prosecutors have charged him with felony property damage, and he’s been summoned to appear in circuit court in late January after briefly fleeing from responding officers.
