The Springfield Fire Department is wrapping up Fire Prevention Month with the fifth and final week of visits to Springfield elementary schools. To date, firefighters have visited 49 public and private schools and met with more than 11,247 students to discuss fire and life safety. 

Fire companies are scheduled through the month of October to visit each elementary school in Springfield. Students will have educational material sent home allowing them to share what they have learned about fire safety. 

“Please visit with your children about what they have learned this month about fire safety and talk about what to do in case of a fire in your home,” said Fire Chief David Pennington.

The Springfield Fire Department encourages all children to memorize their home address and phone number, as well as when and how to call 9-1-1. 

“One message shared with our students is what is an emergency and the importance of when to call 9-1-1,” Pennington said. 

As a reminder, working smoke alarms are the best way to be alerted to a fire in your residence. If you don’t have working smoke alarms or yours are older than 10 years old, the Springfield Fire Department can provide them, free of charge, by contacting Fire Department headquarters at 417-874-2300 or by email to SFDCRR@springfieldmo.gov.
