Local church hands out gifts to area public school students (ksmu.org) — Springfield elementary students at Westport, Williams, Bowerman and York got an early Christmas surprise as James River Assembly gifted presents to every child and teacher. The long-running “Season of Giving” brought a full holiday program, while students who don’t celebrate Christmas enjoyed separate activities so everyone felt included.

Springfield City Council votes to move forward with eminent domain for Hotel of Terror (ozarksfirst.com) — Springfield City Council has unanimously voted to start eminent domain proceedings on the Hotel of Terror property so the city can replace the aging North Main Avenue bridge as part of the Renew Jordan Creek project. Officials say the new bridge should reduce downtown flooding and improve safety, while the property’s value will now be set by independent assessors and possibly the courts.

Greene County Family Justice Center asks for old cell phones for domestic violence survivors (ky3.com) — Springfield’s Greene County Family Justice Center is asking residents to donate working cell phones to help domestic violence survivors safely reach friends or 911, especially during the holiday season. Phones and chargers can be dropped off weekdays at the center on East Pythian Street, where staff will wipe and prepare them for high‑risk clients who need a lifeline.

Jenny Lind Hall Apartments elevator in Springfield could soon reopen (ky3.com) — Disabled and elderly residents at Springfield’s Jenny Lind Hall may finally get relief, as one long-broken elevator is repaired but still closed while the contractor awaits full payment. City officials say, once HUD-related funding delays are resolved, the elevator could open as soon as next week, with work on the second elevator to follow.

Missouri man sentenced for meth trafficking and gun charges (ozarksfirst.com) — A New Madrid County man has been sentenced to more than 21 years in federal prison after Springfield police stopped his vehicle in 2021 and found meth and loaded guns. The case, investigated by Springfield officers and the DEA, underscores ongoing local drug-trafficking enforcement and resulted in a no-parole sentence handed down this week.
