Winners in UScellular’s 7th Annual Black History Month Art Contest

First, Second and Third place winners announced

Today, UScellular revealed the winners of its 7th Annual Black History Month Art Contest with Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield.

Public voting for the finalists’ art was available online, and the winning artists from each Club were awarded gift cards. Winners from Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield received gift cards in the following amounts:


· Ciara received $250 for 1st Place for the portrayal of Madam C. J. Walker
· Izayah received $150 for 2nd Place for the portrayal of Alan Emtage
· Jack received $100 for 3rd Place for the portrayal of George Washington Carver

“Every year our members and staff look forward to this contest,” commented Niki Kiruki, Director of Programs and Prevention Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. “Our staff loves the opportunity to spend intentional time teaching about influential black icons from the world of STEM and our members love any opportunity to showcase their talents. Our members also love getting their whole club, their families, and community involved in the voting process. Our organization is lucky and honored for this partnership with US Cellular.”

Boys & Girls Club members were encouraged to create original pieces of artwork representing influential Black STEM icons. These included historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering and math.

Ten finalists were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club and local UScellular leaders based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Public voting for the finalists was made available online from February 1-15 and the finalists’ artwork was digitally displayed at the local UScellular stores at 3825 S. Glenstone Avenue and 2623 N. Kansas Expressway.
