- Missoula City Attorney Jim Nugent, who retired last Friday, Jun. 30, ended a 48-year career in law at City Hall, and has much to be proud of in terms of accomplishments. A few of the things Nugent made possible with his advocacy in city government were Missoula's 2010 anti-discrimination ordinance, the acquisition of a municipal water supply, the clarification of misdemeanor offenses, and the introduction of the Montana Partner and Family Assault charge in the city's court. Nugent came to Missoula in 1954 with his family and he graduated from law school at the University of Montana in 1975. (Subscription: Missoulian)
- Missoulian is spotlighting local painter, Caleb Meyer, a regular at the Dana Gallery who specializes in impressionistic urban and natural scenes. Meyer recalls being inspired by his grandmother and by the impressionist Robert Moore, who he worked under for a time until circumstances pushed him into education. Twelve years after that interlude, Meyer is now a full-time painter and one of Missoula's most beloved artists. (Subscription: Missoulian)
- A second Critical Resource Summit is being planned for 2024 after the successes of the 2023 summit — meant to help public and private sector institutions engage with natural resources and resource extraction sites in-person in order to better tailor the reduction of environmental harms and the goals of conservation programs. The 2023 summit included a visit by attendees to Montana Resource operations in Butte and the Berkley Pit Superfund site. The event is organized between the National Security Innovation Network and the MITRE Corporation. (Elko Daily Free Press)
