📰 News we're reading

1. Missoula City Council votes to finalize plan to transform downtown (kpax.com) — Missoula residents can expect major changes downtown after City Council advanced the Downtown Safety, Access, and Mobility project, including converting Front and Main back to two-way streets and slimming Higgins to three lanes. The plan also widens the riverfront trail, adds ADA ramps near Beartracks Bridge and Pattee Street, and could start construction as early as 2026 or 2027.

2. Woman shares how swift response saved her life after heart attack during jury trial (kpax.com) — A Missoula juror who went into cardiac arrest during a murder trial says quick CPR from a city police detective saved her life, and she’s now urging neighbors to get trained. The Missoula Fire Department offers CPR classes on the first and third Wednesdays each month at Station Three on 39th Street with pre-registration required.

3. Missoula's domestic violence shelter strapped for space as housing crunch persists (bozemandailychronicle.com) — Missoula’s only domestic violence shelter is full most of the time, as longer stays and a tight housing market strain its 47 beds and overflow space at the Meadowlark building. YWCA staff describe growing needs among survivors, especially families with children, and warn that a key federal grant for rapid rehousing may not be renewed next year, threatening help for dozens of local households.

4. Western Montana receives $2M for stormwater projects (montanarightnow.com) — Missoula is getting $1 million to turn the public library’s rooftop into a green “living roof” that will cut stormwater runoff, filter pollutants, and reduce energy use. The project will also host educational programs for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, while a separate grant funds stormwater upgrades in Butte-Silver Bow.

5. Missoula parish plans 4-year project to save historic ceiling (nbcmontana.com) — St. Francis Xavier Parish in downtown Missoula is launching a four-year, $2 million project to stabilize its 130-year-old plaster ceiling and preserve rare historic frescoes. Emergency repairs already cost about $30,000, and the parish has begun a capital campaign, inviting support from the wider Missoula community as Christmas services draw large crowds and some Masses are livestreamed for those at home.
