Most are relatively inconsequential fender-benders, but all have the potential to be much worse. Assess Well-Being.

After a car accident, you should first make sure that yourself and everyone in your vehicle is ok. Upon its face, this seems like a common sense thing to do. When you consider what a jolt to the system a car accident is, the sheer shock of it all can easily knock you off your bearings. Is everyone coherent and responsive? What is the status of the other vehicle’s occupants? Have any of you sustained any injuries? If so, it is wise to seek immediate medical attention for any perceived injury, no matter how small the injury seems. Before you can proceed with any other step in the process, you must first assess the well-being of everyone involved.

Gather As Much Information As Possible.

Following a car accident, you should document the names and other relevant information of all interested parties. This includes all contact information, their address, and their driver’s license number. This is also the point at which you should be exchanging insurance information.

Gather As Much Evidence As Possible.

Photographing the area where the accident occurred, photos of any noticeable injuries that were sustained, video of the weather conditions, and taking note of any street signs in the area are all adequate ways to document the scene of a car accident. It is also helpful to ascertain whether or not there are any traffic cams or convenient store surveillance cameras nearby that may have recorded the accident. If there were any witnesses to the car accident, take care to gather their information as well.

Contact the Authorities.

Should you ever find yourself in a car accident you should alert law enforcement as quickly as circumstances allow. You definitely want to file an official police report, as well. Be sure to keep a copy of the report for your records, as insurance companies sometimes require proof that a police report was filed to determine liability and/or streamline the claims process. The police report will also prove useful if you’re trying to claim damages; it validates that an accident even happened at all.

Do Not Make Any Admissions of Fault.

“I’m sorry”, “I didn’t see you”, “you came out of nowhere”, these are all statements that can be used against you to illustrate your guilt. The slightest admission can drastically affect your chances of being awarded damages. Even if you think that you caused the accident, it is always best to stay tight-lipped. Additionally, you should avoid discussing who was at fault for the accident with anyone, and you should also refuse to sign any document presented to you until you speak with an attorney.
