Here are the top three stories in Las Vegas today:

  1. Southern Nevada is being hit by a more infectious strain of COVID-19. Known as Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, this new strain is considered the most transmissable to date. Nicknamed the 'Kraken' strain, officials are saying that while it's more easily spread, there's no indication that it's more dangerous than other strains. Officials are urging Las Vegas residents to get vaccinated and boosted to stay safe. (8NEWS NOW)
  2. A Clark County School District meeting on Jan. 17 could change where Las Vegas kids go to school. There are five proposed changes to the district. Two would change the boundaries of the Ellin and Wallin elementary schools. Coronado high school students could end up at Green Valley High School instead. The document states that some students would qualify for grandfathered clauses depending on their grade. (Fox 5 Las Vegas)
  3. Las Vegas is updating and improving its public bus system. On Jan. 29, the bus system in Las Vegas will have new schedules and increased frequencies. These changes will impact several routes, and are expected to improve reliability in the bus system. You can visit the RTC website for a complete list of which routes will be impacted by the changes.
