📰 News we're reading

1. Las Vegas police: Man fatally shot roommate, may have acted in self-defense (reviewjournal.com) — Las Vegas police are investigating a deadly shooting between roommates at an east valley home, with detectives saying the shooter may have acted in self-defense. Ivan Rodriguez, 35, was arrested on weapons and evidence charges and remains in custody, with prosecutors reviewing the case and a Las Vegas Justice Court appearance set for Wednesday morning.

2. Who's buying Las Vegas homes? Investors own nearly 100,000 single-family homes in valley (ktnv.com) — Investor purchases now account for roughly one in five Las Vegas home sales, with nearly 100,000 single-family houses in the valley owned by investors and competition especially squeezing first-time buyers. A new UNLV Lied Center report shows investor activity surged after COVID and remains high, pushing “white-collar” home prices on a largely blue-collar town. Experts say policy changes to boost housing supply may take years to help.

3. NV Energy overcharge scandal nears resolution as state investigators call for full refunds (ktnv.com) — Las Vegas NV Energy customers may be closer to full refunds after state investigators urged regulators to make the utility repay about $65.5 million in overcharges plus interest going back to 2002. The case, sparked by a Las Vegas resident’s complaint, could also force NV Energy to keep billing records indefinitely and undergo regular audits, with a key public workshop set for January 21.

4. Las Vegas occupational therapy program granted accreditation (8newsnow.com) — Future occupational therapists in Las Vegas now have a fully accredited doctoral program at Hawaii Pacific University’s local campus, opening a direct path to national board exams and licensure. The seven-year accreditation expands access to OT education, supports Nevada’s healthcare workforce needs, and offers flexible hybrid learning that helps students balance classes, recovery, and clinical training close to home.

5. UNLV professor rescues stray cats in Las Vegas neighborhood (fox5vegas.com) — A UNLV clinical sciences professor is quietly tackling Las Vegas’ massive stray cat problem by trapping neighborhood cats, getting them spayed or neutered, and returning the healthy ones. Using a custom remote-controlled trap and partnering with The Animal Foundation, he’s personally adopted several hard‑to‑place cats and helped rehome dozens more, often paying out of pocket for intensive medical care.
