🌱 Desert Oasis Student Dies After Athletic Event + Terrorism Arrest

  1. On Thursday night, a Desert Oasis High School student died after suffering from a “medical emergency” during an athletic event. The 16-year-old student-athlete was identified by the Clark County Coroner’s office as Ashari Hughes. According to a letter from the school’s principal Ian Salzman, “staff immediately began providing medical aid and continued until paramedics arrived.” As of the time of this writing, her cause and manner of death are still pending.   2. A man has been accused of terrorism after he allegedly damaged a power facility outside of Las Vegas on Wednesday, police said. According to a statement from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police released on Friday, 34-year-old Mohammed Mesmaria was booked on suspicion of committing an act of terrorism, arson, and escape by a felony prison. Employees of the facility, located at U.S. 93 and Interstate 15, about 15 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, said that an unknown person set fire to a vehicle next to a transformer which resulted in damages, according to LVMPD.   3. The Las Vegas Strip show based on Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell” closed unexpectedly on Jan. 1. The show, which was intended to be a permanent fixture at Caesars Entertainment’s Paris Las Vegas, closed after only three months, due to tepid sales and lack of interest. “Bat Out of Hell” opened in October of 2022 and was expected to have a long run.
