On behalf of all of us at the City of Reno, today we send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Richard “Dick” Scott. Our heart goes out to his wife, Sharon, of 64 years and his four children and nine grandchildren, who he was incredibly proud of.

“No one can ever take the place of Dick Scott. He was one of the most amazing individuals I have ever had the honor to work with. His positive impact on the City will never be forgotten. Not only was he an incredible champion for Reno, but I was also honored to call him a dear friend and a mentor,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said.

On top of his distinguished professional career at both Rainbo (foods) and Boomtown, Dick’s life was one focused on public service to his fellow Nevadans. That was his true passion. Most recently, he spent 17 years as an RHA commissioner, guiding some of the most important affordable housing initiatives in northern Nevada. The Reno Housing Authority (RHA) Board of Commissioners, and RHA staff, are heartbroken to learn of his passing.

Even after his tenure as a commissioner ended in 2020, Dick would still call and drop by the RHA, just to learn how the organization and its employees were faring. He cared that much.

In addition to his important work with the RHA, he also served as a Washoe County Commissioner, a Reno City Council Member for Ward 5, was appointed to the City of Reno Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board and served on the Reno Downtown Improvement Association Board of Directors. Dick was a trustee of Washoe Medical Center and a cabinet member of the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

Dick was an energetic and passionate leader, yet humble; never expecting recognition for his work. This is an insurmountable loss to the City of Reno and our entire region, and we will be forever grateful for his years of public service and the incredible legacy he leaves behind.
