  1. The Forest Service has announced plans to conduct prescribed burns in the Dog Valley area, situated 10 miles west of Reno in Sierra County. Fire crews will be engaged in underburning approximately 335 acres throughout the week, targeting surface fuels like grasses, shrubs, and small trees, while leaving the overstory vegetation untouched. Residents are advised not to be alarmed by visible smoke and urged not to call emergency services, as local fire departments are already informed about the prescribed burning activities. Recreation in the area will be temporarily restricted during the burning process, and prescribed fire notices will be prominently displayed for forest users' awareness. (KTVN)
  2. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is set to distribute a generous amount of wood chips this month as part of their community initiative. On May 27 and May 28, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., locals can visit the Lemmon Valley Station situated at 1390 Nectar Street in Reno to claim their share. Fire personnel will be present to lend a helping hand in loading the chips into vehicles. This supply of approximately 80 yards of chips — available on a first-come first-served basis — is a byproduct of the Fire District's recent green waste collections. (KOLO)
  3. Jerleen Bryant, the former CEO of the Maui Humane Society in Hawaii and former employee of The Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, has been appointed as the new interim CEO of the Nevada Humane Society. The decision was made during a special meeting on Monday hosted by the Washoe County Regional Animal Services Advisory Board. Newly appointed Board President Ray Gonzalez also invited Executive Director of the SPCA of Northern Nevada Jill Dobbs to the board. In an effort to address mounting complaints and improve community relations, Gonzalez is seeking additional board members and volunteers who share a passion for animal welfare and can contribute to changing the culture of the nonprofit organization.
