Illegal Arms Deal Led To Tuesday Murder, Reno Police Say

A man police say was trying to sell stolen guns and ammunition from a California police department was killed during the transaction.

RENO, NV - Reno Police have arrested a man they allege shot and killed another man, then stole his vehicle in an illicit arms deal gone awry late Tuesday night. Mike Kizer was arrested Thursday and is facing a murder charge in the death of Patrick McDaniel.

According to Reno Police, McDaniel, 31, drove to 175 E. Grove St. on Tuesday night carrying "various firearms, ammunition, and explosive caps" that were stolen from a California law enforcement agency. That agency is conducting their own investigation. RPD did not release the name of that agency to protect the ongoing investigation.

McDaniel brought the items to the Grove St. home with a friend with the intent to sell them, police said. While in the parking lot, police allege that Kizer, 34, shot McDaniel "multiple times" and left the scene in the vehicle, which still contained the stolen items. A person who McDaniel traveled with stayed with him at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, RPD said.

McDaniel was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Police initially were searching for McDaniel's white Honda Accord. It was located Wednesday morning after being abandoned.

Detectives from Reno Police Department and the Regional Crime Suppression Unit located Kizer at the 200 block of N. McCarran Blvd. in Sparks on Thursday. Early Friday morning, detectives executed a search warrant of an apartment on the 2100 block of Sutro Ave. and found the stolen items. Police also found other stolen items from the California law enforcement agency.
