  1. The U.S. Department of Labor announced The Children's Cabinet will receive a $1.5 million grant to lead the Washoe YouthBuild program. The program is meant to help disconnected youths attain their High School diploma or High School Equivalency, introduce and train them on careers in construction, create transitional housing for homeless families, design a plan for local apprenticeship programs, and solidify leadership skills. Washoe's YouthBuild will serve 65 youths ranging from ages 16-24 who are not currently enrolled in school and come from low-income families, as well as those involved in the criminal justice system, aging out of foster care, pregnant, or parenting. 2. A new Adaptive Cycling Center, located in the Rosewood Nature Study Area, hosted its Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, May 6. The Reno-based center will be a one-stop shop for outdoor fun that's designed to offer adaptive bicycle rentals to individuals with disabilities. Each of the bikes will have adaptive features that allow these individuals to jump right onto the trail as soon as they are ready to go. (KOLO)
  3. Global venture capital firm Fifth Walls is investing $16 million in the Reno-based carbon accounting startup nZero. This company specializes in helping businesses track their carbon emissions in real time, which is a crucial tool as more are focused on achieving the concept of "net zero" by cutting their carbon emissions to as close to zero as possible. According to nZero's President and CEO Adam Kramer, this investment is a win not only for themselves but for the city of Reno as well. (Reno Gazette Journal)
