Police: Suspect Fired First In Jan. 24 Officer Involved Shooting

An attempted traffic stop escalated into

SPARKS, NV - Reno Police Department said a suspect fired shots at two Sparks Police Department officers before officers returned fire, killing him in a Jan. 24 officer involved shooting, according to a Friday release. Twenty-seven year old Humberto Vera-Munoz was killed when a traffic stop led to a shootout, police said.

According to police, officers with SPD attempted to pull a vehicle over for speeding near Rock Blvd. and Prater Way, but were unable to catch up to it. A short time later, the same vehicle was seen near an apartment complex at 1100 15th St. in Sparks. The vehicle fled a second attempt by police to stop, driving through the apartment complex before stopping "abruptly" in the middle of the parking lot.

Police say Vera-Munoz then got out of the vehicle and fired a shot at one of the officers. Both officers returned fire, according to the release.

Both officers, whose names were not released, are on routine administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. The release did not say whether the officers body cameras were activated during the incident.
