Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- During a meeting on Wednesday, the Reno City Council approved a budget of $862 million for the fiscal year 2023-2024, representing a $21 million increase compared to the previous year. The city's new budget prioritizes public safety, infrastructure, economic development, arts, parks, and historical resources. The budget includes the addition of 28 new positions, including 10 for the Reno Police Department, three for the Reno Fire Department, and one park ranger. Mayor Hillary Schieve commended her colleagues for their diligent efforts in passing the budget and emphasized the significance of this process in supporting the city's strategic priorities. (KOLO)
- The Reno Police Department (RPD) is seeking the public's help in identifying the suspects involved in a shooting incident that took place in Reno on Mar. 7. Officers were dispatched to 1141 California Avenue following reports of gunshots at approximately 7:14 p.m. Investigation revealed that two individuals engaged in a verbal altercation with parents at a local youth wrestling facility, and later discharged multiple rounds into the air using a high-powered rifle before fleeing the scene in a dark-colored four-door sedan. No injuries were reported. RPD encourages anyone with relevant information to contact their non-emergency line at 775-334-2677 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900 or submit tips via text at 847411 (TIP) using the keyword "SW." (KRNV)
- In a recent council meeting, the Reno City Council passed a new ordinance, criminalizing the act of observing sideshows and street races as a misdemeanor offense. This decision closely follows Washoe County's adoption of a similar ordinance only a few days prior, while the City of Sparks had already implemented the same regulation in April. (KOLO)
