Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- Reno police arrested four suspected drunk drivers on a patrol Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Police made 105 stops, arresting one driver for reckless driving and another for felony drug possession. Another driver was apprehended on a misdemeanor arrest warrant, and 49 traffic citations were issued. (KOLO)
- Reno assemblywoman Democrat Sarah Peters and Nevadans concerned about natural conservation are moving to prevent future mine abandonment with the introduction of Assembly Bill 313. The Nevada Mining Reform Coalition supports the bill, which would obligate mining companies to backfill open pit mines once extraction has ended so as to prevent the formation of pit lakes. Pit lakes contain acidic water and heavy metals that can leech into groundwater and drinking water reservoirs. The bill would apply to mines applied for after Jan. 1, 2025, but permits exemptions if companies can provide evidence that the backfill requirement is unfeasible or would make their operations unprofitable. (This Is Reno)
- The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to pass land transfer bills this session, taking from the vast 80 percent of land in Nevada which is owned by the federal government — the largest percentage of any state — and giving it to local businesses as well as city and county governments. Land transfers are a bipartisan priority for Nevada's congressional delegation, building on the 2022 success of the addition of 558,000 acres to military training grounds at Naval Air Station Fallon — as well as 28 square miles and $20 million to Native tribes. Nevada congressman and Republican Party chair Mark Amodei has commented that land transfers are being focused on this session because "people get attention-deficit disorders in presidential years."
