Here are the top 3 stories in Reno today:
- The Reno Police Department is requesting millions of dollars from the Reno City Council to fund the construction of the new public safety center as well as investments in new Tasers, bodycams, dash cams, services, and training. The projects would be paid for from federal COVID-19 relief funds and a 10-year "medium-term obligation" at a 10 percent interest rate. Police say the investments will improve public safety and efficiency, though some civil liberties groups have expressed concern that certain surveillance software may be subject to potential abuse. - A local company has received a $58 grant million to help expand the domestic production of electric vehicle batteries. The Reno-based American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) will use the funds to build and operate a new manufacturing facility that is expected to bring 150 new skilled jobs to the region. The facility will be constructed in Tonopah and is expected to take multiple years. (KOLO)
- The Nevada Department of Unemployment, Rehabilitation and Training issued a news release Tuesday revealing record-low unemployment rates in Reno. The city's current unemployment rate is 3.1 percent, down from 3.5 percent in August. The dip reflects improving rates in all counties statewide, where total unemployment sits at 4.4 percent for the third month in a row. (This Is Reno)
In partnership with T-Mobile:
Nominate a local hero. Heroes aren’t just the people behind grand gestures and life-saving measures. They’re also folks from all walks of life who make things better in Reno with small gestures, acts of selflessness, or just by showing up. We're working with our friends at T-Mobile to give thanks — and a bit of recognition — to some of these folks. So if you know a teacher, health care provider, veteran or someone else who's making a difference in Reno, give them a shoutout! Just fill out this form, and we’ll do the rest, by following up and doing stories about them on Patch, so the whole neighborhood can celebrate how awesome they are.
