Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- The City of Reno is undergoing a redrawing of its ward boundaries, transitioning from five to six wards and eliminating an at-large seat. To engage the public in this process, the city has launched an online portal where residents can suggest boundaries and submit maps. The portal, powered by Districtr, provides demographic data and will accept map submissions until Jun. 22. A redistricting meeting is scheduled for Jun. 14, with a subsequent review of preliminary maps on Jun. 27 at Reno City Hall council chambers. (2News)
- On Saturday, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signed a bill — AB356 — banning the use of tracking devices. The move comes after both Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Washoe County Commissioner Vaughn Hartung were found to have tracking devices placed on their vehicles. The law, which goes into effect on Jul. 1, prohibits a person from placing mobile tracking devices on someone else's car, but law enforcement agencies are exempt if they adhere to state law and constitutional guidelines. - Murphy, a police K9, passed away, as announced by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. Originally from Ireland, the springer spaniel was trained in narcotics detection and worked alongside Deputy Gamboa in the High Intensity Drug Trafficking area task force. After starting his public service in 2012 with Nevada State Police Trooper Vietti, Murphy joined the sheriff's office and retired in October 2019 after a dedicated seven-year career. Remembered for his unwavering love for playing ball, Murphy spent his retirement years with his family, always keeping his beloved ball within reach. (KOLO)
