Find out what's happening in Renofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

  1. Two schools in the Washoe County School District were placed under a code yellow lockdown, which has since been lifted. Pine Middle School was placed under lockdown while the police investigated potential threats, while Smithridge Elementary School was placed under lockdown due to police activity in the area. As of the time of this writing, both schools have now returned to normal operations. (KOLO)
  2. Join Together Northern Nevada is hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day event on Apr. 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at nine locations throughout Washoe County, including Reno and Sparks. This semi-annual event allows area residents to turn in their unused and expired prescription medications with no questions asked, helping to protect their loved ones, community, and the environment. By participating in this event, the northern Nevada community can come together to slow down the alarming trend of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings. (KRNV)
  3. Washoe County Commissioners have approved Phase 3 of the Nevada Cares Campus emergency shelter, which involves constructing an intake center including a security checkpoint, a nurses station, and staff offices, among other things. The project, which has a budget of $28 million dollars, was approved by a 3-2 vote, despite some opposition from homeless advocates who believe the project is overfunded. Commissioner Jeanne Herman and Commissioner Mike Clark were the dissenting votes, with Herman concerned about the price tag, some of which is taxpayer money. (KOLO)
