Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- More federal help is on the way. Anther 100 National Guard members will probably be deployed to New Hampshire "as soon as next week," Gov. Chris Sununu said, to assist with the state's high number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19. About 30 guard members will be sent to long-term care facilities that have asked for help, and 70 to hospitals that are at or near capacity. New Hampshire currently has 70 National Guard members assisting health care facilities and hospitals. More of the "strike teams" will be going to long-term care homes in Bedford and Nashua to help free up needed hospital beds. The governor said that the next Booster Blitz is scheduled for this weekend, with about 1,500 appointments still available on the state's COVID-19 website: https://business.nh.gov/covid. - The New Hampshire House again passed a bill to legalize marijuana in the state and sent it to the Senate on Thursday. A similar marijuana legalization bill passed the House in 2020 but was not passed in the Senate. In 2020, Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski, a former DEA agent, spoke against legalizing marijuana in the state, and Gov. Chris Sununu also is opposed to the legislation. - Three New Hampshire Powerball winners received good news in the new year. There were three $50,000 winning tickets sold on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022. One ticket was sold at a Circle K in Bedford, another ticket was sold at the Danville Market in Danville, and one lucky player bought a ticket online through N.H iLottery. The current jackpot is $20 million. (NH Lottery)
