Bedford Schools: 'Possible Misconduct' Probe Ongoing

Bedford school officials came under fire supposed support for a former counselor convicted of sexually assaulting a student.

BEDFORD, NH — Bedford schools officials have commissioned an investigation into "possible employee misconduct" following a controversy over a former guidance counselor. Bedford school officials came under fire over the department's implied support of Kristie Torbick, a former Exeter High School guidance counselor convicted last month of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student.

Before she worked in Exeter, Torbick was a guidance counselor for Bedford schools. Torbick has not been charged with any crime related to her time in her Bedford.

Torbick was sentenced to up to five years in prison, according to WMUR. A Bedford High School dean was among dozens who wrote a letter of support for Torbick to the court ahead of her sentencing — a move that angered many in the Bedford community. Superintendent Chip McGee even resigned during the controversy.

"It would be difficult for me to continue to lead the Bedford School District at this point because of circumstances beyond my control," McGee said in a statement.

Interim Superintendent Mike Fournier said officials commissioned an investigation, expected to be completed next week.

"I want to assure the entire Bedford community that the process will be fair and objective and will respect the due process rights of all involved," Fournier said in a statement.
