Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. In the spirit of giving, Bedford-based Realtor Marianna Vis pledged to make a $200 personal donation to the New Hampshire Make-A-Wish Foundation from each of her home sales in 2021. The Make-A-Wish Foundation helps fulfill the wishes of children with a critical illness between the ages of two-and-a-half to 18 years old. You can find out more about the New Hampshire Make-A-Wish Foundation here: (Make-A-Wish NH)
  2. Local skiers, snow tubers, and snowboarders, McIntrye Ski Area in Manchester is open! Although they will be closed on Christmas Day, get your skis and snowboards ready for Dec. 26. This fun family spot, run by the city of Manchester, already has one trail open thanks to the cold weather and snowmakers blanketing the trails, with one trail already open. The ski area said the West Chair and Large Magic Carpet (beginner area) is available for skiing and riding and the snow tubing Bonneville Family Thrill Hill will be open after Christmas vacation week, according to their website. If you check out their Facebook page, you will also catch a glimpse of the friendly (and real) McIntyre elf. (Facebook)
  3. A fund is being established to provide scholarships for aspiring aviators by the family of Emanuel Vomvolakis, 23, of Michigan who died when his prop plane crashed on the banks of the Merrimack River on Friday, Dec. 10 in Bedford. Recovery crews were seen on Technology Drive retrieving the engine from charred trees on the river bank, and small debris from the crash was pulled from the river. Vomvolakis was delivering medical supplies when he radioed the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport tower reporting engine trouble just before the fiery crash. He was the pilot and the only person on the plane, authorities said. According to an online obituary, Vomvolakis was an accomplished and skilled pilot who got his private pilot license at the age of 17 and then went on to get his commercial pilot license. The family said that contributions in his memory can be made to the Fly High Manny Memorial Fund established in his honor to give scholarships to aspiring aviators. You can read more here: (Patch)
