Man Found Dead Inside Tent At Manchester Homeless Camp

MANCHESTER, NH — Manchester Fire and AMR ambulance responded to a report of a person in a homeless encampment in the woods behind the NH DMV on South Willow Street on Thursday.

Firefighters and medics arrived at about 11:30 a.m. and quickly determined the person was deceased and was in a small homeless camp located about 100 yards from a popular rail trail. Manchester Police were notified of the death and the scene was turned over to them.

Officers parked in the parking lot behind the DMV and walked into the site of the death, and notification was made to the New Hampshire Medical Examiners' office.

About 2 p.m., the body was removed from the woods by a local funeral home, and the cause of death will be investigated.

Manchester Police Spokesperson Heather Hamel confirmed a man was found deceased and the death did not appear to be suspicious. The location of the man is about one-eighth of a mile from where Daniel Whitmore, a Manchester resident who was walking on the rail trail, was stabbed to death. The suspect, Richard Moore, 40, was homeless and had moved to Manchester from Mississippi shortly before the stabbing.

On Christmas day a 34-year-old woman was found dead inside a tent on the sidewalk outside the Families In Transition Homeless Shelter in Manchester. The next day a homeless woman gave birth to a premature boy in an encampment on the Westside of Manchester. The child was rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to a NICU at Dartmouth Medical Center in Lebanon.
