Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. National Guard, FEMA Activated For ICUs: New Hampshire broke a record yesterday with more than 10,000 people that have active COVID-19 infections in the state. Seventy National Guard troops are being sent to hospitals Monday or Tuesday to help the staff in overcrowded ICUs so nurses and doctors can spend more time with patients. ICUs around the state are over capacity with severely ill COVID-19 patients. Dr. Greg Baxter, president of Elliot Health System, said their ICU is running "at about 150 percent capacity." The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is also providing 24 medical professionals to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, and 30 paramedics to Concord Hospital, Wentworth-Douglass in Dover and Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon. The medics are expected to arrive Saturday and will provide assistance for the next two weeks "with the possibility of some of them being extended beyond that," according to FEMA regional coordinator Jarrett Devine. The National Guard is also helping the state with a “Booster Blitz” on Saturday to administer 12,000 booster shots. You can read more here: (WMUR)
  2. Entrepreneur Of The Year: Congratulations to Bedford's Kyle York who was named Entrepreneur of the Year by The N.H. Tech Alliance. The award announcement on Thursday was the highlight of the nonprofit’s four-day Innovation Summit. The award was presented during a virtual event recorded at Events United, an event company in Derry. York, a graduate of Bentley College, spoke about his upbringing in Bedford where he learned business from his grandparents and parents who had businesses making shoes and selling athletic equipment. York is a former Dyn executive who played an important role in the company's acquisition by Oracle in 2016. Two years ago, he started investment firm York IE and has invested in more than 25 companies and has advised almost 50. He also thanked his wife Katie and said he hopes his children, Henry, Tedy, and Evie, will continue in the family tradition. (The Union Leader)
  3. Celebrate The New Year: Here are a few fun ideas and celebrations to make 2022 sparkle. Dress in your most elegant attire to ring in New Year's Eve at The Bedford Village Inn with a four-course prix fixe dinner or dine in one of their winter igloos with a complimentary bottle of champagne. LaBelle Winery in Derry is having New Year's Dinner with Big Band dancing and a light display. If you are looking for 1920's flair and comedy, there is a NYE Great Gadsby Gala in Manchester at the DoubleTree Hotel. Families with children who want to celebrate New Year's Eve together can visit the Dover Children's Museum on Dec. 31. They are having four daytime New Year countdowns from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Santa's Village in Jefferson, New Hampshire also has activities planned early in the evening for all ages to celebrate.
