📰 News we're reading

• Bedford schools anticipate $4-5 million spending increase next year (unionleader.com) — Bedford homeowners could see about a $595 increase in school-related property taxes next year under a proposed $98 million school budget, partly offset by a likely drop in the town portion of the tax rate. The School Board will hold a public budget hearing Jan. 13 and a deliberative session Feb. 3, ahead of March votes on the operating budget and union contracts.

• GOP Replaces Democratic Chair of Education Freedom Account Committee (indepthnh.org) — A Bedford state representative, Kristin Noble, played a key role in Tuesday’s vote to oust a Democratic senator as chair of New Hampshire’s Education Freedom Account Oversight Committee and install Republican Rep. Rick Ladd instead. The committee oversees the rapidly growing EFA voucher program, which is running over budget and drawing sharp debate over who benefits, how special education status is determined, and whether taxpayer money is being properly tracked.
