Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation was featured in the spotlight in NHPR's biweekly Give Back New Hampshire segment. They provide a network of groomed trails where anyone can snowshoe or cross-country ski that "connects the entire town" of Jackson, according to the nonprofit's Executive Director Ellen Chandler. If you plan a trip to Jackson, New Hampshire from Bedford this winter, you may want to find out more about the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation. You can read more and listen to this story here: (NHPR)
  2. After reviewing the GOP Redistricting plan that passed the House and is headed for the Senate, Gov. Chris Sununu called the plan "too partisan-leaning." Sununu said New Hampshire is an independent state and shouldn’t create districts that are "all Democrat or all Republican." The House plan would change 75 towns and/or city wards of more than 300,000 people, or a quarter of the state’s population, between two districts. When talking about the GOP plan on Friday, Sununu said he didn't think this would be the plan that ends up on his desk. The House has not met in the Statehouse in Concord since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Instead, members have met in larger places, like at the expo center in Manchester and the Bedford sports complex. You can read more about this story here (subscription): (The Union Leader)
  3. Masks are temporarily the trend for Bedford Schools. On Monday night, the Bedford School Board voted unanimously for a temporary indoor mask mandate until Jan. 28 to help stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus. The decision was made to help stop the rising numbers of coronavirus infections in Bedford schools. In Nashua, schools had to close earlier this week after more than 200 staff members were absent, mostly due to illness from COVID-19. State health officials said there are currently 136 active coronavirus clusters of infections in schools, with 32 outbreaks in schools across the state.
