Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Firefighters from Bedford and the surrounding towns responded to a three-alarm fire at a house on Darby Road Monday night. Firefighters said water was in short supply where the house was located and only two firetrucks could access the fire at one time as the home was in a wooded area set back from the road. Officials said the house suffered significant damage. The home's new owner had moved to Bedford in November. The Bedford fire department is investigating the cause of the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. (Patch)
- New Hampshire's 400-member House of Representatives, one of the largest legislative bodies in the United States, will hold its next legislative session starting on Jan. 5, 2022, at the DoubleTree by Hilton expo center in Manchester. The lawmakers met at The NH Sportsplex in Bedford last year due to pandemic concerns. In a statement, House Speaker Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry said that the 30,000 square-foot expo center will provide ample space for social distancing. With hospitalizations at record levels and community transmission high, meeting in person at the expo center "is the responsible thing to do," Packard said. (The Center Square)
- Bedford has Moxie! This New England beverage was invented by a doctor from Maine and contained ingredients like gentian root and wintergreen. Once carbonation was added, the root-beer tasting beverage with a bitter aftertaste took off and became one of the most widely produced soft drinks in America, even outselling Coca-Cola. Moxie was said to cure everything from low energy to feeling overwhelmed and anxious, and was advertised as a drink that gives you "vigor," making it a household name. What's the Bedford connection? In 2007, Moxie was purchased by Cornucopia Beverages of Bedford. It was then acquired by the Coca-Cola Company in 2018, but Moxie would remain a New England brand with bottling operations are still here, in New Hampshire. You can read more here: (Yankee Magazine)
