Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- A few New Hampshire towns are turning trash into treasure. Trash in New Hampshire is piling up in landfills, but Derry has good news. They have started to earn money from recycling, when only a few years earlier it was less expensive to send everything to landfills. Some businesses, like paper companies, have started to buy more recycled cardboard, and the more trash that can be turned into profit helps keeps it out of burgeoning landfills. What changed? In 2018, China stopped accepting trash and contaminated trash from the U.S. and other countries and people had to find new ways to manage and recycle trash. Some recycling programs started to turn a profit for the first time in years. That's a good sign. But officials say finding ways to reduce the amount of trash we produce is the future. New Hampshire sends over a million tons of trash to the landfill every year. The next time you and your neighbors go to the Bedford Transfer Station, be sure to look for the recycle bins. - A second "Booster" Blitz is planned in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu said on Thursday. This comes after a record number of COVID-19 cases have overwhelmed hospitals in new Hampshire with seriously ill patients. A 24-person Federal emergency team arrived last week at the Elliott Hospital to help overwhelmed doctors and nurses. On Thursday, the state announced 11 more deaths. State Epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan said that deaths from COVID-19 in New Hampshire are “among its highest ever,” with 53 deaths in the past seven days. The federal government approved sending another 30 paramedics to New Hampshire to help hospitals deal with the high number of COVID-19 patients. (The Union Leader)
- More than 903 students tested positive at Cornell University on Tuesday afternoon, doubling from 469 cases earlier that morning. The Ivy League University partially shut down its Ithaca, N.Y. campus from the “rapid spread”of a possible omicron COVID-19 outbreak among students. School officials reported a “very high percentage” of the new infections are omicron cases in fully vaccinated people. School official said 97% of Cornell’s population is fully vaccinated. Colleges in New Hampshire are taking COVID-19 seriously, and are urging students to get booster shots and are doing what they can to stop the spread as hospitals are full and deaths are rising.
