What makes your Mom extra special?

My mother is a single mom of three girls. Growing up, she was always there for us through everything — she even took in extra kids that needed a safe place to stay while their mom got better. She goes above and beyond to fight for us and to fight for what she believes in. Growing up with her as a mom taught me how to fend for myself. Now that I am an adult, I know that I have the ability to survive on my own, but she is always there as a safety net to catch me when I fall. Even if it is above her means she always made sure we had everything we needed. She had her oldest at 16, middle at 18, and me at 20. I am 20 now, and knowing at my age she had three little girls to take care of all by herself is astounding. We where never rich or anything, but she found affordable vacations ...

My sister's birth was in a newspaper. Cora was born in the middle of a terrible snow storm in my grandmother's bathroom. She was blue from the cold, but my mother fought for her and got her to the hospital safely at 18 years old.

She read to us every night before bed while still going back to college to get her degree to create a better life for herself and her children. She is the person — I look up to her when I feel like giving up. We all have a lot of health issues, and she works two jobs still to put her oldest through college and make sure she can support us if we ever need to fall back on her. And still with both jobs, she is always right by outside for doctors visits and hospital stays. My mom is the strongest person I know, and I feel everyone should know how amazing she is. Even her current jobs she works with helping get children the child care they need and at night she helps mothers who are survivors from abuse and homeless mothers at a shelter. Seeing her never give up is what keeps me going.

Why do you feel your Mom deserves the spotlight?

My mom deserves this spotlight because other young moms should see how well she did and how hard she worked to give us the best life possible. She is an inspiration. My sister Cora, her middle child, is now a single mother of a beautiful 2-year-old baby girl, and my mom makes sure she sets aside time to spend with her. She taught us how to love, learn and excel in everything we do no matter what the hardships may be. She also taught us when it’s OK to give up or let someone go, and how to know when someone in yourself is causing more harm than good.

Happy Mother's Day to Crystal Kennard-Emery, and thank you for all you do!
