EXETER, NH — Three Massachusetts men were arrested Tuesday afternoon after police were called to a possible shooting in the area of the Swasey Town Forest.

Around 12:30 p.m., police were sent after a report of shots fired in the area. When they arrived, officers encountered four people in the wooded area of town, Chief Stephan Poulin of the Exeter Police Department said. At least two of them were armed with handguns, he said, while one was wearing a ski mask.

“The four men fled on foot into the woods towards a construction development,” Poulin said. “Area schools were notified to lock down out of an abundance of caution.”

One of the “armed subjects was quickly” detained and two others would be found “emerging from the wood line near Industrial Drive,” he said. Two firearms were recovered. New Hampshire State Police had a helicopter in the area, too, assisting with the incident, according to online flight data.
