Death Of Homeless Man Under Investigation In Exeter

Chief Stephan Poulin: The death of a 31-year-old man does not appear to be suspicious — but detectives are still investigating.

EXETER, NH — The body of a dead homeless man found on Epping Road Tuesday is under investigation by the Exeter Police Department.

The man, 31, was found unresponsive in the afternoon in a wooded area near a gas station not far from Route 101, Exeter Police Chief Stephan Poulin said. The department’s preliminary investigation of the scene did not reveal the death to be suspicious, at this time, he said. However, detectives continue to investigate, Poulin said.

“This tragedy brings to light the ‘dark figure’ of homelessness,” Poulin said. “In smaller or more rural communities, the homeless often go undetected, staying in vehicles or temporary tents/shelters hidden away in the woods or fields. Unfortunately, this can hinder the ability of the community and professional people with resources to help and offer appropriate assistance to those in need.”

Poulin said the public should contact the Exeter Human Services Department if they know of people in need in town. Anyone currently homeless and in need can also reach out to officials.

Anyone with information about the case can contact the police at 603-772-1212.
