Off-Duty Firefighters Pull Woman From Burning Car Before It Explodes On The NH Seacoast
East Kingston Firefighter Robert Bishop and Josh Abbott of Chelmsford, Mass., help a driver after a car crashes on East Road on Saturday.
EAST KINGSTON, NH — Two off-duty firefighters were instrumental in saving a woman's life in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday.
Around 3:30 p.m., fire and rescue teams were sent to a report of a crash on East Road not far from Bartlett Road. Before they arrived, they learned Robert Bishop, an off-duty East Kingston firefighter, was driving on Route 107 when a Dodge Challenger nearly struck his vehicle. After missing his vehicle, the car drove into a utility pole and burst into flames.
“Bishop immediately exited his vehicle and ran to assist the female driver of the Challenger,” Chief Ed Warren of the East Kingston Fire Department said.

Another driver who happened to be passing by was Josh Abbott, an off-duty Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Firefighter. The two, Warren said, worked quickly to free the woman from inside the car, which was burning and filling with smoke. She was removed just before the vehicle exploded and became fully engulfed in flames. Warren said she was taken to the hospital by EMTs and is in stable condition.
"The heroic actions by Firefighters Bishop and Abbott no doubt saved this person's life," he said. "This incident showcases the commitment all firefighters and first responders make to come to the aid of those in need, no matter what, and I want to thank them both for their quick and selfless actions."
