📰 News we're reading

1. Republicans fail to override vetoes of book ban, bathroom bills; vow to return to issues (newsfromthestates.com) — Exeter’s own House Democratic leader Alexis Simpson backed efforts to sustain Gov. Kelly Ayotte’s vetoes of bills on school book removals, bathroom restrictions, and fetal development videos, though Republicans vow to revive them in 2026. The closely divided House repeatedly fell short of the two-thirds needed to override, highlighting sharp statewide debates over transgender rights, education policy, and local taxes that Exeter residents will see again next session.

2. 8 Standout Main Streets In New Hampshire (newenglandnewspress.com) — Downtown Exeter’s Main Street gets spotlighted for its walkable charm, from views of the Squamscott River to stops like the American Independence Museum and Water Street Bookstore. The piece also highlights Phillips Exeter Academy’s architecture and nearby dining, while comparing Exeter with seven other picturesque New Hampshire main streets worth a day trip.

3. Seniors leading the way as Dover boys hockey beat Seacoast rival (seacoastonline.com) — A Dover High boys hockey win played right here in Exeter saw the Green Wave top Winnacunnet 5–1 at Phillips Exeter Academy, with freshman Ben Cheek scoring twice. Seniors like captain Cam Bourque and Nick Carrier say they’re focused on guiding a young roster back toward championship form, emphasizing leadership, hard work, and keeping the team united through the season.

4. Mother of Kensington man killed by police files wrongful death suit (seacoastonline.com) — Exeter is one of seven Seacoast communities named in a new federal wrongful death lawsuit over the 2024 police shooting of Kensington resident Anthony Previte. His mother alleges officers from multiple departments used excessive, militarized tactics during a mental health crisis, while the state attorney general previously ruled the shooting legally justified. The case could shape future regional police practices and municipal liability.
