Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Amtrak Train in Exeter

EXETER, NH — A pedestrian struck by a train in Exeter on Thursday has died.

Around 10 a.m., police and fire and rescue teams were sent to the area of 152 Front St. for a report a man had been struck by an Amtrack train. When they arrived, Chief Stephan Poulin of the Exeter Police Department said first responders determined it was a man and he had been killed.

“Amtrak police responded to the scene as well to assist,” he said.

Witnesses were questioned, and they corroborated both evidence at the scene and information later gathered by the police, determining the man died of an apparent suicide.

“The person does not appear to have been from the area, and their identity is being withheld pending notification to family,” Poulin said.

The chief added anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or concerned about a loved one who may be in distress can contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for assistance by calling or texting 988. The Lifeline offers 24-hour confidential support. Call 911, he added, in life-threatening situations.

Another option is to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
