Alleged Cop Impersonator Indicted

A Newmarket man has been indicted for allegedly flashing a badge and pretending to be a cop while pulling over multiple vehicles in Hampton last fall.

Michael Heath, 42, has been indicted on two Class B felony counts of false personation in Rockingham Superior Court.

Heath was arrested four times in various area communities last year while "escalating" the nature of his crimes, which were allegedly performed using a military police badge and a smartphone application that creates flashing blue lights.

The indictments are connected to stops in Hampton and Stratham. Hampton police had issued an alert in September in regard to Heath's activity on Exeter Road near Bonta

Heath wasn't in uniform and wasn't an actual member of the Hampton Police Department during the stops, during which he used an unmarked 2005 Buick Century with the license plate "DFIANT."

The Union Leader has reported that Heath told police that he has also stopped motorists in Hampton Falls, Newfields, Newington and Portsmouth, in addition to similar incidents in Kittery, Maine, and along Interstate 495 in Massachusetts.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt or conviction; rather, it means a grand jury believed there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial.
