Family of Rye Student Awaits Autopsy Report

John Durkin's father is remaining in Italy until authorities release his son's body.

The family of Rye native John Durkin is awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports to see if they might shed any light on the 20-year-old college student's death last week in Rome, Italy.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that Durkin's father is remaining in Rome until authorities release his son's body. An autopsy was performed this week and results are expected to be released any time now.

Durkin reportedly died when he was hit by a train last week. He was in Italy as part of the Trinity College Program in Rome.

He was last seen by friends at a bar named Sloppy Sam's in Campo dei Fiori around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 20. The Italian publication Roma Today reported that camera footage then showed Durkin walking alone near the train tracks, about a mile away from where his body was found.
