Firefighters Enjoy Another Big Year at Charity Cook-Off

A 25th anniversary is huge milestone for most people and organizations, and the 25th annual Hampton Firefighters Chili Cook-Off didn't disappoint Thursday.

A large crowd packed Wally's Pub to try 25 different chili dishes while helping raise a significant amount of money for the annual Hampton Firefighters Toy Bank, for which the cook-off serves as the primary fundraiser.

Helping raise money for a deserving cause wasn't a hard decision for the attendees or the competitors, especially once they surveyed several completely different "traditional" chilis and the beanless, steak, bacon, veal and other out-of-the-ordinary varieties that helped create one of the most diverse cook-off menus in recent memory.

"I think we have some great supporters out tonight," said Hampton Firefighter Jason Newman, who annually helps organize the event. "Everyone's having a blast. The amount of people is kind of irrelevant because everyone who comes has a great time for a great cause. They're here to raise money for needy children to open presents on Christmas morning."

The event, which carries some big bragging rights, annually raises between $1,500 and $2,500 for the toy bank.

Fundraising totals and Thursday's professional and non-professional trophy winners weren't immediately available.
