Hampton School District Creates Thanksgiving Meal Baskets

For the second year in a row, meal baskets were put together for dozens of families with around 60 students attending school in town.

HAMPTON, NH — The Hampton School District collected Thanksgiving baskets for families in need this week.

For the second year in row, SAU 90 employees, students, businesses, and organizations donated items to ensure 31 families representing around 60 children in the district had a meal basket. Donations came from The Old Salt Restaurant, Hampton Youth Academy, and Teacher Jeans Fund. Students at Hampton Academy also donated canned and non-perishable items in homeroom.

"It is so great to see our community come together to support a great cause, and I thank everyone who made this food drive such a success," Superintendent Lois Costa said. "Holidays can be especially difficult for those in need, so everyone involved should be proud of making this Thanksgiving special for so many families."

The families picked up the meals at the Hampton Community Coalition on High Street. They included boxed mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and other canned goods, as well as a gift card to Hannaford, to purchase any other items needed, like a turkey.

The effort was started in 2020 with members of the Hampton Helping Hampton Student Committee, Emily Fixler, a social worker, and Christina Coffill, a Spanish teacher.

"It was our goal for all families in the district to have access to a good meal this Thanksgiving," Fixler said. "We want families in the district to know that we are here for them in times of need, not just during the holidays but throughout the entire year."
