Whole Foods is coming to Portsmouth.
The grocery chain said it plans to open a store in the downtown area in 2016. The store will employ about 175 workers in a 40,000-square-foot building. The company didn't reveal its exact location.
"We are excited to be reaching residents of coastal New Hampshire with this location in Portsmouth," said Laura Derba, a Whole Foods regional president, in a statement. "We have been receiving requests for a Portsmouth store for many years, and we are pleased to be able to open and serve this vibrant community."
It would be the only major grocery chain to operate downtown.
Whole Foods is opening its first New Hampshire store in Nashua next year.
