Here are the top stories in Manchester today:

  1. The 148th Kentucky Derby will take place on May 7, the first Saturday in May in Louisville, Kentucky, but a New Hampshire racehorse that won 54 years ago is still swirling in controversy. Dancer’s Image, owned by New England businessman Peter Fuller, rallied from last place to win in 1968. Six days before the race, the horse was given an approved amount of a pain-killing drug that should have "cleared his system" by the race, but officials later disqualified the horse after they said the drug was found in a test. Many said tests were tampered with because Fuller supported the civil rights movement. The case has never been solved. You can read more here: (WMUR)
  2. The Executive Council will reconsider accepting $100 million in federal grants to build affordable housing in New Hampshire. In a meeting on April 20, the Republican-majority council was ready to reject the American Rescue Plan Act funds requested by Gov. Christopher Sununu but instead decided to table the vote. Sununu said the program’s guidelines should be able to support a variety of projects. (The Union Leader)
  3. Homelessness in New Hampshire has remained about the same after doubling in 2020. The increase in 2020 was mostly due to the pandemic, officials said in an annual N.H. Coalition to End Homelessness report. The report released Tuesday said Manchester had 1,714 homeless individuals in 2021, while Nashua had 768, with the rest scattered throughout the state. What was a little unexpected is that 2020 also had the highest rate of homeless students, with 725 in Manchester and 427 in the Nashua area. The report also said that a $100 million American Rescue Plan Act grant that New Hampshire received and COVID-19 funds helped. (Manchester Ink Link)
